For over 2000 years the Marmore Falls in the province of Terni offers a unique spectacle: the highest in Europe (165 meters).

The creation of the waterfall dates back to 271 BC, it is a formidable work of Roman engineering that served to favor the outflow of the waters of the Velino, responsible for frequent and disastrous floods and the transformation of vast extensions of land into unhealthy swamps.

In later times and until the Renaissance, further improvement works were carried out up to the current layout.

This great availability of water has allowed the creation of numerous industrial complexes in the area.

The territory of the Waterfall has large specimens of willows, alders and holm oaks. The Aleppo Pine is often clinging to the limestone emergencies of the slopes, while the hills are covered with holm oaks, oaks, maples and beeches.

A visit to the Botanical Garden located within the Nera River Regional Park (2460 hectares) allows you to admire the different plant species that inhabit the area.

There is the presence of a rich aquatic fauna. The woods are populated by many species of birds including the mountain swallow and the redstart. Among the birds of prey, the short-toed eagle and the kestrel have a prominent place.
